Advice

FAQs

Microblading is a form of semi-permanent brow tattooing, where a small handheld tool with several tiny needles is used to add pigment to the skin. Microblading is typically used to create, enhance or reshape eyebrows. Microblading differs from standard eyebrow tattooing as each hairstroke is created by hand using a blade that creates fine scratches in the skin – whereas standard eyebrow tattooing is done with a machine and single needle. The process deposits pigment into the upper layer of the dermis, so it fades more rapidly than traditional tattooing techniques which deposit pigment deeper into the skin.

Microblading artists are not tattoo artists and tattoo artists cannot necessarily offer microblading treatments, as the techniques require different training and use different types of ink. Microblading is also sometimes called embroidery, feather touch or hair-like strokes.

Nanoblading is a new brow treatment that uses ultra-sharp nano needles that can actually mimic the diameter and dimension of a real hair on the skin. It’s a form of cosmetic tattooing but it’s not as deep as a conventional tattoo, as it only goes through the top layer of the skin into the upper dermis.

Microblading and nanoblading both offer fine hair strokes that look natural and true to life, but nanoblading provides further precision and accuracy because it uses tiny needles, compacted together into an ultra-fine blade.

The ‘Blade and Shade’ treatment, also known as the combination brow, is the ultimate brow treatment, offering both the hair-like strokes of microblading and the softer effect of powdered brows.

The two techniques combined give you a beautifully natural yet elegantly defined brow. The inner brow is feathered with hair strokes while the tails are powdered to achieve the perfect definition. Hair strokes are also added around the outer line of the arch to soften the powdered tails.

A powder brow treatment is a cosmetic semi-permanent makeup technique designed to create eyebrows with a soft powder effect, very similar to powder makeup. Powder-effect brows are created with a shading technique using a permanent makeup device, similar to a tattoo gun.

Although the procedure can take 2 hours or more, most people report only minor pressure or discomfort, and less pain than a typical tattoo, due to the use of a numbing cream and the needle not going as deep as a traditional tattoo. Of course, this will depend on your own personal tolerance to pain. Some level of pain or discomfort should be expected, but don’t worry – so far everyone has left with both eyebrows completed!

Depending on your skin type, lifestyle and how you look after your new brows, you should expect anything from 1 year to 18 months before you need another session.

I always provide both verbal and written aftercare advice. You will also receive an aftercare pack with soap and cream that you should use. Aftercare may vary according to your skin type – for example, oilier skins will need more washing and less cream. See our Aftercare resource.

Scalp micropigmentation is a non-surgical treatment where tiny dots are tattooed onto the scalp using a tattoo machine, adding density to thinning hair. It can also create the effect of a close buzz cut for men whose hair is receding or men who have hair loss due to other factors such as hair transplants, health conditions or alopecia, for example.

Yes, absolutely. Women often experience hair loss, receding hair, alopecia and thinning hair. It can be a taboo subject for women and can really affect a person’s confidence. This treatment can help to give that confidence back.

Everyone’s pain threshold is different, but the machine only tattoos as far as the upper epidermis, which is not as deep into the skin as a normal tattoo – so pain and discomfort should be minimal, and the treatment does not usually cause any bleeding. It’s important you stick to the pre-care advice.

Scalp micropigmentation typically lasts 4-6 years. This will depend on your lifestyle, skin type and how well you look after your skin.

I always advise not to pick or scratch the tattooed area, as this will cause fading. After a few days you may notice some peeling. This is completely normal and you are advised to leave this to peel off naturally and not pick at it. If it itches, just tap or pat this area to take away the itch.

Aftercare
I’ll talk you through the aftercare before you leave my studio, and you’ll receive aftercare leaflets to take away and re-read as needed. Aftercare is extremely important and to boost the healing process and ensure the results last as long as possible, you must stick to the aftercare advice.

  • Days one to four: Avoid activity and exercise that will make you sweat. No water, shampoo or lotions should come into contact with the area. Do not shave the area, rinse, scrub or even touch with your hands. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight. Keep the area dry and clean – you can dab with a clean damp cloth if necessary and wear headwear but not for prolonged periods of time. Normal work life and household duties can continue.
  • Days four to seven: You can now gently rinse your scalp with water, but do not allow water from a power shower to spray onto the scalp – the water pressure will be too strong. We recommend avoiding shampoo until day 7, and when you do use it, do not scrub at the scalp. Gently rub the product over your skin and pat dry. You can resume light exercise and apply a fragrance-free moisturiser, but avoid self-tanners, exfoliants or skin irritants.
  • After 10 days: If you decide to shave your head now we advise that you use an electric foil shaver like the Remington R91. Be careful not to shave off any scabs that are still on the skin. Leaving your scalp to heal until day 14 is the best option. Do not use a razor blade to shave your head. You can now exercise as normal.
  • After 14 days: You can now use anti-shine lotions like L’Oreal Pure, HeadBlade HeadLube or a matte lotion.
  • After 30 days: You can go swimming, in the sea or swimming pool, and can go on holiday as normal. You should always protect your head with an SPF of 30-50 and wear a hat whenever possible to protect the pigment colour.
